While walking around Freeport, guests will be able to get a feel for the history
of the city since several districts, such as the downtown and the Old River
School area, have been preserved. Each year at the end of August, a re-enactment
of the 1858 debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglass is held in Debate
Square. On clear Wednesday nights, visitors are invited to the JETS Observatory
to peer into the skies through a large telescope. Green space is abundant here,
with several popular parks, including Read Park, the Oakdale Nature Preserve
and Knape Park, each boasting more than a mere playground. People can also take
a tour of the northern Illinois countryside on the Silver Creek & Stephenson
Railroad Antique Steam Train, which runs from May to October.
